I think we can all relate to being so busy that we sometimes forget/don’t have time to do our devotions. Or on the other end of the spectrum, perhaps sometimes devotions just seems more like an obligation and a chore, rather than something we are actually getting value from. But I was reminded this week that God’s Word isn’t just words on a book we read every night before sleeping. The Word is alive and potent and impacts our everyday. I really like the description in Hebrews:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart – Hebrews 4:12, NIV
I think the description of God’s Word as “alive” is so beautiful. These words carry power and live and moves. Personally, this week saw three consecutive instances where my daily devotions turned out to be something that encouraged me through the day, or a Word that a friend needed to hear, or even just something that reminded me about God and redirected my priorities towards Him.
Knowledge of God’s Word is the very foundation of our faith, and we are so blessed to readily have access to God’s Word whenever we want, a privilege not everyone around the world has. Let’s try to make reading God’s Word an intentional part of our daily schedule, and I’m confident that we’ll see His Word move powerfully in amazing ways beyond our imagination.
